Basalt is a dense and durable natural stone valued for its high mechanical strength, low water absorption and resistance to wear and weathering. Its deep black colour gives architectural and landscaping projects a distinctive yet understated appearance.

Why Choose Basalt?

  • High Strength and Durability
Basalt is a strong and hard-wearing natural stone suitable for areas exposed to regular loads and intensive use. It is widely used for paving, driveways, stairs, terraces, curbs and other demanding outdoor applications.
  • Low Water Absorption
Basalt has low water absorption, which helps reduce the impact of moisture and changing weather conditions on the material. This makes it suitable for outdoor paving, landscaping and a wide range of architectural applications.
  • High Resistance to Abrasion
The dense structure of basalt provides good resistance to abrasion and everyday wear. This makes it suitable for pedestrian areas, driveways and other surfaces exposed to regular traffic.

Different Surface Finishes

Basalt can be processed using different mechanical finishing techniques depending on architectural requirements and intended use:

  • Flamed: A textured, slip-resistant surface. Ideal for outdoor steps, paving stones, sidewalks and public areas.
  • Split / Textured: Retains the natural relief and texture of the stone. Used for façade cladding, traditional paving and plinth panels.
  • Polished: A smooth, glossy surface that enhances the deep black colour of the stone. Ideal for kitchen countertops, window sills, interior floor tiles and decorative interior elements.
  • Honed: A smooth, matt surface without a glossy finish. Its reduced reflectivity makes it suitable for both interior flooring and selected exterior applications.

Natural Features and Unique Applications

Basalt deposits are characterised by natural columnar formations, consisting of hexagonal columns that can reach up to 6 metres in length within the rock mass.

Cross-cutting these natural basalt columns makes it possible to create unique paving slabs that retain the natural five- or six-sided contours of the original block. When laid, the spaces between the slabs can be filled with grass or decorative aggregate, creating a distinctive natural landscaping design.
